Full Focus: Designing Real-World Experiences in the Age of Distraction

What makes a piece of design command attention, invite participation or remain memorable long after it has been encountered?

Full Focus brings together four leading practitioners working across live experience, interactive installation, curatorial practice and graphic communication to explore how contemporary design shapes the way we see, move through and respond to the world around us.

Across very different disciplines and scales, Kate Dawkins, Jason Bruges, Priya Khanchandani and Greg Bunbury each use design to frame experience. Through spectacle and visual storytelling, responsive environments and technology, exhibition-making and cultural interpretation, and graphic communication in public space.

Rather than asking how physical design can simply compete with digital distraction, the panel will consider the design decisions that make experiences compelling in the first place. How do scale, material, movement, interaction, narrative, image and context influence where our attention goes? How can design encourage curiosity, participation or reflection? And what distinguishes an experience that briefly attracts attention from one that genuinely stays with us?

Drawing on practices that span mass live events, site-specific installations, exhibitions and public interventions, the discussion will examine attention as something designers actively shape, not simply something they compete for.
