How can we reclaim our relationship with music in an era dominated by passive streaming, social media algorithms, and commercial hype?

In the third edition of the Four Corners panel talk hosted at Netil House, we brought together a multifaceted panel of curators, sound system designers, selectors, and event hosts, including:

• Reuben McKenzie: Co-founder of Shai Space and creator of the YouTube platform Grounded
• Yu Su: Composer, musician, DJ, chef, and creator of the Polysonic Eating series
• Pritpal Ajimal: Veteran selector, radio host (NTS, Voices Radio, Sister Midnight), graphic designer, and curator
• Henry Farrant: Radio host, DJ, manager, and co-founder of Big Ears Sound System

Audience demand is shifting away from passive consumption towards slow, immersive physical listening experiences that prioritise true intentionality. Curators foster these unpretentious environments through warm hospitality and lighting while selectors craft narrative journeys across diverse genres from classical ragas to minimal techno. Prioritising storytelling over algorithms allows physical listening spaces to protect grassroots culture from brand exploitation whilst bringing accessible sound system culture to local communities.
