A global approach to intentional design with Tamer Koseli

For more than 15 years, Tamer Koseli has developed a design practice defined by clarity and intention. Now, from his space at Hackney Downs Studios, he is exploring a global approach to functional design.

As you step into Tamer’s studio, his approach becomes immediately clear. The shelves are lined with typography books and visual references. Products he has designed sit quietly on display. The space feels like a sanctuary for considered ideas and practical outcomes. A graphic designer and illustrator, his current work spans brand identity, product design and visual storytelling. It is shaped by an enduring interest in how design operates in the everyday, and by the influences that have guided him from the beginning.

“I’ve always been drawn to Swiss graphic design and the clarity it brings,” he says. “Japanese culture as a whole has also had a deep influence on me. Everything from its visual language to how daily life is designed feels thoughtful and inspiring.”

These reference points continue to inform his process. From Hackney Downs Studios, Tamer leads a multidisciplinary consultancy working with both commercial and cultural clients. The studio provides a space for focused, reflective work and supports a practice built on research and iteration. “When I’m feeling creatively stuck, I find going back to books, archives, or even old imagery can open up new ways of thinking about a project.”

His early career included work for international names such as Nike and National Geographic. These projects helped lay a foundation, but a turning point came when he began working with Chefman, a global consumer brand. “I initially joined as a freelance designer, and over time, that evolved into a full-time role as design lead,” he explains. “I didn’t plan it in advance. I’ve always focused on building meaningful, long-term relationships with the brands I work with.”

Now, as design lead, he oversees a wide range of product design projects for international markets. “Every decision has ripple effects, whether it’s related to user experience, manufacturing, or even global events like tariff changes,” he says. “It’s taught me to think more broadly and consider the wider impact of design decisions.”

Tamer continues to navigate emerging tools and technologies, while staying grounded in process and craft. “Right now, it’s impossible to ignore the impact of AI. It’s both exciting and a bit daunting. These tools are becoming more accessible, which is great, but it also raises questions about how they’re used. I believe that while anyone can create with these tools, the value lies in the intention and thinking behind the work.”

His outlook remains focused on simplicity and longevity. “I aim to design products that are not only functional but also joyful to use, with stories behind them,” he says. “Sustainability is also a big part of what I care about. Creating things that last, that people can connect with, and that ideally stay out of landfills.”
