Resident Spotlight Laura Gee

In a nutshell, what do you do?

LG: I'm an artist and business owner. I own an illustrated product range including popular illustrated cards, and I create drawing and paintings.

A day in the life of Laura...

LG: Arrive around 10, sort through wholesale orders, create new products for half a day or a full day, and then I spend a day drawing and painting, going to life drawing class.

What's your background?

LG: I studied illustration at Manchester, then moved to London three and a half years ago and created this business. I've returned to painting and drawing separately. The business is a job, application for my illustration.

I have to draw or create, if I don't, I'm unhappy. I like things that are emotionally impacting, my products are silly and rude. Things which make you stop and stare for a minute. I like people showing intimacy in their work.

What advice would you give to someone starting out?

LG: Trust your own feelings of what you want to do, your own instinct. Don't worry too much about what other people are doing, believe in your approach.

What's it like being a freelancer in East London?

LG: It's great to be a freelancer in East London. Where we are situated, close to other studios, exhibitions and galleries, there's so much in walking distance, we are able to connect face to face.

Best thing about The Heartspace?

LG: The best thing is the people, great to meet people doing different things and with cross over. It's so isolating working at home. I genuinely love being here, it's a really supportive environment and the relationships I've built are wonderful, being part of other people's process and journey.

Coolest thing that's happened lately?

LG: Lazyoaf starred my work! And generally working with cool, independent shops.

What can we expect from you this year?

LG: More self-initiated artworks, artist books and projects. An exhibition. Watch this space.
